Ski Tube Storage, Care, & Maintenance

Chances are, once you slip into that new ski tube, you're going to want to cruise the open waves on it again and again in seasons to come. Here, we give you a few simple tips for keeping your ski tube in tip-top shape.

  • Make sure your ski tube is completely dry before storing it, and don't store it upside down. Also keep the water tube and other water ski equipment out of direct sunlight, which can prove especially damaging to tow ropes. Heat or other extreme temperatures can cause the boat tube to expand and become over-inflated.
  • Clean your ski tube with water and soap or a mild detergent.
  • When it comes to ski tube maintenance, the first thing to keep in mind is proper inflation. Follow the inflation instructions on your water tube very carefully. Using your boating tube without fully inflating it will place stress on the tube cover, as water will collect between the cover and the PVC bladder. If your ski tube is over-inflated, excess stress will be placed on the bladder. In addition, leaving an over-inflated skitube in the sun will likely result in a misshapen PVC bladder that will probably not return to its original shape. Misshapen towable tubes are harder to tow, may behave erratically, and may submarine.
  • If you plan to store a water ski tube for a few months or a season, deflate it and store it in a cool, dry place away from any insects or other critters that might want to make a home out of it.
  • Should use decide to store your ski tube on the boat you use to tow it, make sure the water tube and tow rope are safely secured in an area that won't obstruct a captain's or driver's view. Simple tube-storage kits can be purchased for around $20. Or, if necessary, deflate the water tube and store it with the tow rope and an inflator in a cabin or another safe place on or below deck.
  • If your ski tube is brightly colored, the dye may bleed with its first use. Be sure to take plenty of towels or other coverings to prevent your boat from stains.
